14 Best Places to Travel Without a Passport

For U.S. citizens, destinations like Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and Guam require no passport. Within the mainland, Alaska and Hawaii are passport-free. Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean (excluding Cuba) require a passport for air travel but allow land or sea entry with an enhanced driver’s license or birth certificate. You will still need to show valid identification, like a birth certificate or driver’s license, to enter these places.

What To Do If You Lose Your Passport Before A Trip

If you lose your passport before a trip, immediately report it to the U.S. Department of State by calling 1-877-487-2778 or filing online. For travel within 72 hours, visit a passport agency with proof of travel (e.g., flight itinerary) and evidence of citizenship (a photocopy or birth certificate). You can apply for an urgent same-day appointment. For non-urgent cases, submit Form DS-64 (statement of loss) and Form DS-11 (new application) with a fee of $165 for a passport book and card. Expedited service costs an additional $60 and takes 2–3 weeks. If you are abroad, contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for an emergency passport.
