How Does Your Luggage Get To Your Destination
At check-in, an agent tags your bag with a barcode containing your flight number and destination. The bag enters a conveyor system carrying it through scanners and diverters. Automated sorters read the barcode and push the bag onto the correct chute for your flight. Baggage handlers load it into a cart or container and drive it to the aircraft, where a team lifts bags into the cargo hold, stacking them to distribute weight. The hold is pressurized and temperature-controlled during flight.
After landing, handlers unload the bags onto another conveyor. Scanners read the tags, routing each bag to the carousel assigned to your flight. If your bag is connecting, the system re-routes it to the next departure gate without reaching a carousel. Airlines track each bag’s progress; if a bag is delayed, the last scan point helps locate it. Most airlines aim to deliver bags to the carousel within 20 to 30 minutes of arrival at the gate.
Santa Monica
Santa Monica’s camera obscura workshops let you step into a room where light and shadows project an image of the outside world onto a flat surface. These workshops teach how the device—a precursor to modern photography—uses a pinhole and lens to create a live, moving picture. Participants learn to adjust the lens and mirror to focus the image, and can experiment with making simple pinhole cameras. The workshops are held at the Camera Obscura Art Lab, a historic building on the Santa Monica Pier. Sessions typically last two hours and cost around $25 per person. Advance booking is recommended because space is limited to about 12 people per workshop.
While in Santa Monica, you can also visit the beach, the pier’s amusement park, and the Third Street Promenade. If you’re planning a longer trip, a month-by-month guide to the weather in Italy might help you decide when to visit other destinations. For local nature, the top 10 National and State parks to see include nearby Topanga State Park and Point Mugu State Park. For a faster getaway, South beach, Miami in a weekend offers a completely different coastal experience.
