Hiking And The Outdoors In Greece

Vikos Gorge is one of the deepest gorges in the world, and Zakynthos' sea caves offer secret swimming holes. These two highlights from our Greece coverage are gathered into one page.

Hiking The Hidden Wonders Of Vikos Gorge

Vikos Gorge, located in the Zagori region, plunges to a depth of over 1,000 meters at its deepest point. The main hiking trail runs roughly 20 kilometers from the village of Monodendri to Vikos village, taking most hikers between 6 and 8 hours to complete. Along the way, you walk ancient stone-paved paths called "kalderimia," passing through forests of oak and beech, and crossing the Voidomatis River. The gorge is part of the Vikos–Aoös National Park, and the best months for hiking are May through October, when the weather is dry and the trail is clear. For a shorter option, the 3-kilometer hike from the Oxya viewpoint down to the river offers panoramic views without the full-day commitment. The nearby villages of Monodendri and Papingo have guesthouses and tavernas, and the drive from Ioannina takes about 45 minutes. For travelers arriving by air, you can also check how far is Athens airport to cruise port if you are combining this hike with a cruise itinerary.

Zakynthos' Sea Caves

Zakynthos, a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, has sea caves along its western coast, particularly around the Blue Caves near the village of Volimes. These caves are accessible by boat from the port of Agios Nikolaos or from the main town of Zakynthos, with tours typically lasting 2 to 3 hours. The water inside the caves is crystal-clear and turquoise, and you can swim directly from the boat into the caverns. The most famous cave, the "Blue Cave" or "Kianoun Cave," has a natural arch that creates a shimmering blue reflection on the water. The best time to visit is between June and September, when the sea is calm and the sun is high. For a quieter experience, early morning tours avoid the midday crowds. If you are island-hopping, this is one of the hidden gems in Greece that many visitors miss. The caves are also a short drive from the shipwreck beach of Navagio, though that beach itself is not a swimming spot due to frequent rockfall closures.
