Hpan Pu Mountain Hike In Hpa An, Myanmar
Hpan Pu Mountain towers behind Hpa An. The hike to the summit takes two to three hours round trip. The trail winds through bamboo groves and rocky sections, with a short scramble near the top. At the summit, you are rewarded with a panoramic view of the plains and the distant Dawna Range. The mountain is a limestone karst, typical of the Kayin landscape. No entrance fee is documented, though local guides are available in Hpa An for a small fee. Hike early morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Bring at least one litre of water per person; there are no stalls on the trail.
Mt Zwegabin Monastery Hike In Hpa An, Myanmar
Mt Zwegabin rises 2,334 feet (711 metres) above Hpa An. The hike to the summit takes around two hours each way, following a well-trodden path through forest and over rocky steps. Near the top, a monastery sits in a cave-like alcove, offering a place to rest. The monastery is active, so visitors should dress modestly and remove shoes before entering. From the summit, you can see the town below, the winding Thanlwin River, and the patchwork of rice fields. The trail is steep in sections, and walking poles are useful. No admission fee is charged, though a donation at the monastery is appreciated. Start early to catch the sunrise, which lights up the limestone peaks across the valley.
Both hikes are accessible from Hpa An town centre by taxi or motorbike taxi. For a broader itinerary, these trails pair well with the highlights and Bagan temples in Myanmar further north, or with the best things to do in Mandalay Myanmar if you are planning a longer trip. For practical logistics, see our advice on getting around Myanmar by bus or private car between towns.
