Part of our Iowa guide.
Iowa’s secret prairies and refuges preserve some of the rarest landscapes in the Midwest, from restored tallgrass ecosystems to untouched original prairie. These seven places offer quiet trails, rare wildlife, and a direct look at conservation work that few travelers ever see.
Neal Smith Refuge
Located just outside of Des Moines, the refuge spans acres of restored tallgrass prairie and oak savanna. Visitors can hike scenic trails, observe bison and elk, and learn about prairie restoration at the visitor center. The refuge’s prairie chicken viewing blinds and seasonal wildflower walks are highlights for anyone interested in hiking and the outdoors in Iowa. This is a working restoration site, so check in advance for trail closures during prescribed burns or seed collection.
Unveil Hitchcock House's Secret Underground Railroad Past
The Hitchcock House in Lewis, Iowa, built in 1856, served as a safe haven for enslaved people escaping to freedom. Today, guided tours walk visitors through the hidden rooms and crawl spaces where fugitives hid. The house is a stop on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. Tours run seasonally, and the site is one of the unique cultural and natural treasures in Iowa that connects natural history with human history.
Union Slough Refuge Marshes
Union Slough Refuge, located in north-central Iowa, protects a rare prairie pothole wetland system. Bird watchers can spot waterfowl, shorebirds, and migrating songbirds from the auto tour route and observation platforms. The refuge’s marshlands are especially active during spring and fall migration. A short walking trail leads to a viewing blind overlooking the slough. No entrance fee is charged, and the refuge is open daily from dawn to dusk.
Hayden Prairie State Preserve
The preserve is a haven for native plants and wildlife. It is one of the few places where you can see Iowa’s original prairie landscape, untouched by modern development. A half-mile loop trail winds through big bluestem, Indian grass, and wildflowers such as purple coneflower and compass plant. The preserve is managed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and no motorized vehicles are allowed. Visit in late summer for peak blooming season.
Prairie Pollinator Research Sites
Iowa’s prairie pollinator research sites are open to anyone curious about native plants and the insects that sustain them. You can see butterflies, bees, and other pollinators in action among fields of wildflowers. These sites are part of ongoing university and conservation studies, so interpretive signs explain the research methods and species being monitored. The sites near Ames and in the Loess Hills are particularly accessible. Bring binoculars for close-up views without disturbing the insects.
Neal Smith's Hidden Oak Savannas
Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge is home to the Oak Savannas, a rare ecosystem that once covered much of the Midwest. These savannas mix open grasslands with scattered oak trees, creating a unique habitat for plants and animals. Walking through the refuge, you might spot bison grazing or hear the call of a red-headed woodpecker. The refuge’s Oak Savanna Trail is a 1.5-mile loop that passes through restored savanna and offers interpretive signs about fire ecology and bur oak regeneration.
Walnut Creek Refuge Wetlands
Walnut Creek Refuge Wetlands, part of the Neal Smith complex, offer a blend of natural beauty and wildlife. The wetlands serve as a sanctuary for many species, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and photographers alike. A boardwalk trail extends over the marsh, allowing close views of cattails, sedges, and the frogs and dragonflies that live there. The refuge is open year-round, but the best bird activity occurs during migration.
