North Island New Zealand Itinerary: 6 Day Road Trip

This 6-day road trip covers Auckland, Rotorua, Taupo, and Napier. Day 1–2: explore Auckland’s waterfront and volcanic cones, then drive to Rotorua (about 3 hours) for geothermal parks and Maori cultural experiences. Day 3–4: head to Taupo (1 hour south) for lake cruises and Huka Falls; continue to Napier (2 hours east) for Art Deco architecture and wineries. Day 5–6: return via Tongariro National Park for alpine walks, then back to Auckland. The loop is roughly 800 km total.

How To Spend 48 Hours In Queenstown

Queenstown sits on Lake Wakatipu against the Southern Alps. Day 1: morning bungy at Kawarau Bridge (the original bungy site), afternoon gondola and luge rides up Bob’s Peak, evening lakefront dining. Day 2: Milford Sound day trip (4-hour drive each way) or a jet-boat ride on the Shotover River; alternatively, hike the Queenstown Hill Trail (2 hours return). Most attractions are within walking distance of the town centre.

Day Trips From Auckland

Waiheke Island is a 35-minute ferry from downtown Auckland; it offers vineyards, beaches, and walking trails. Rangitoto Island (25-minute ferry) lets you hike to the summit of a volcanic cone in about an hour. The Waitakere Ranges (45-minute drive west) have rainforest trails and black-sand beaches like Piha. Hobbiton Movie Set is a 2-hour drive south; book ahead. All trips can be done in a single day, returning to Auckland by evening.

A Day Trip From Te Anau To The Milford Sound, New Zealand

Te Anau to Milford Sound is a 120 km drive (about 2 hours each way) through Fiordland National Park. The road passes the Homer Tunnel (single-lane, expect short delays). Once at Milford Sound, a 1.5-hour boat cruise is the standard way to see waterfalls, seals, and Mitre Peak. Depart Te Anau by 7 am to avoid peak traffic; the last cruise departs around 3 pm. No fuel is available at Milford Sound, so fill up in Te Anau.
