Getting Around Vietnam

4 places and guides from our Vietnam coverage, gathered into one page.

How To Get To Phu Quoc

Fly directly to Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or Da Nang. Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, and Bamboo Airways operate daily flights; the flight from Ho Chi Minh City takes about one hour. From the airport, taxis and ride-hailing apps like Grab reach Long Beach and Ong Lang in 20–30 minutes. Book flights at least two weeks ahead during peak season (November to March). Ferries from Rach Gia and Ha Tien take 2–2.5 hours, but flights are faster for most travelers.

How Long Is A Tourist Visa In Vietnam

A standard single-entry tourist visa allows a stay of up to 30 days. Apply online for an e-visa (30 days, single entry) or get a visa on arrival pre-arranged through a travel agency (also 30 days). A multiple-entry visa can be issued for up to 90 days; specify this when applying. Visa exemptions apply for citizens of certain countries (e.g., South Korea, Japan, Russia) for stays of 15–45 days depending on nationality. Check the latest official rules before departure, as policies changed in 2023.

How NOT To Get Visas For Vietnam (A Couple Of Idiots Running Around The Airport)

Alice and Bob learned the hard way: do not arrive without a visa or a confirmed visa-on-arrival letter. They landed at Tan Son Nhat Airport without either, then spent hours running between counters and missing their connection. Apply for an e-visa at least two weeks before travel, or arrange a visa-on-arrival letter through a reputable agency. Keep a printed copy of your visa approval and your passport ready at immigration. If transiting through Vietnam, check whether your nationality requires a visa even for a short layover.

How To Go From Hanoi Airport To City

Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) is 45 km north of Hanoi's Old Quarter. The fastest option is a taxi or ride-hailing app (Grab, Mai Linh): 35–50 minutes and about 300,000–400,000 VND (US$12–16). For a cheaper ride, take the No. 86 bus (every 20–30 minutes, 35,000 VND, 50–70 minutes) which stops at the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake. An airport-to-city express train is under construction but not yet running. If you arrive after 11 p.m., pre-book a private transfer or use Grab, as public buses stop running.
